God’s Lovingkindness

Your lovingkindness, O Lord, extends to the heavens,
Your faithfulness reaches to the skies.  Psalm 36:5

Notes:

My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises!  Psalm 57:7

For Your lovingkindness is great to the heavens
And Your truth to the clouds.
11 Be exalted above the heavens, O God;
Let Your glory be above all the earth.  Psalm 57:10, 11

To the writer of the Psalms, God’s lovingkindness is very, very great — it extends to the heavens. The very thought of it calls forth worship “Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Your glory be above the earth!”

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.  Psalm 103:1-5

Note:

Notice the things that are associated with God’s lovingkindness:

  • He benefits His people;
  • He pardons their iniquities;
  • He heals their diseases;
  • He redeems their lives from the pit;
  • He crowns them with lovingkindness and compassion;
  • He satisfies their years with good things.

The Lord performs righteous deeds
And judgments for all who are oppressed.
He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the sons of Israel.
The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.

Note:

Notice more things that are associated with God’s lovingkindness:

  • The Lord performs righteous deeds and judgments for all who are oppressed;
  • The Lord made His ways known to Moses and His acts to the sons of Israel;
  • The Lord is compassionate and gracious;
  • He is slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.

He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.
12 As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
13 Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.
14 For He Himself knows our frame;
He is mindful that we are but dust.  Psalm 103:6-14

Finally, notice the worship that pours forth at the thought of God’s lovingkindness:

My heart is steadfast, O God;
I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my soul.
Awake, harp and lyre;
I will awaken the dawn!

I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples,
And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
For Your lovingkindness is great above the heavens,
And Your truth reaches to the skies.
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
And Your glory above all the earth.
That Your beloved may be delivered,
Save with Your right hand, and answer me!  Psalm 108:1-6

Your righteousness is like the mountains of God;
Your judgments are like a great deep.
O Lord, You preserve man and beast.
How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God!
And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings.
They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house;
And You give them to drink of the river of Your delights.
For with You is the fountain of life;
In Your light we see light.  Psalm 36:6-9
